Demelza Donations Reach £500k

Capital Radio’s Dave Berry accepted a cheque for £75,000 from Peter Varney, Chairman of the Axis Foundation, on behalf of Demelza Hospice of which he is Vice President. The charity, that operates in East Sussex, Kent and South East London, cares for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and aims to ‘add life to days, where days cannot be added to life’. This latest donation tips the total amount gifted by Axis, and its charitable arm, the Axis Foundation, to over £500,000.

The DJ and avid Demelza supporter tweeted about the ceremony: “A truly remarkable effort by @AxisEuropePlc who raised £75k for @DemelzaHospice in 2015. Thank you so much.”

Many of the children at Demelza Children’s Hospice aren’t expected to reach adulthood and so the hospice aims to ease their discomfort and provide support for their families. Axis adopted the hospice as its charity partner out of appreciation for its essential work and regularly challenges its employees to raise money for their ‘Adopt a Nurse’ campaign in which the money raised helps to fund Demelza’s specialist care nurses’ annual salaries.

As well as a direct donation from Axis, Axis staff have also tirelessly fundraised and jumped out of planes, organised charity balls and waxed body parts (that would only ever be waxed for charity) as well as other fundraising activities.

Giving his thanks, Demelza CEO Ryan Campbell said: “This year’s donation is an incredible amount! Everyone at Axis has taken our cause to their heart and has been fundraising for the charity over the last 11 years.

“The £500,000 total raised to date has meant that Demelza has been able to pay 13 specialist nurses’ salaries, allowing us to provide the highest quality care possible to hundreds of children, young people and their families that need support across the South East.”
